This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference aims to examine, explore and critically engage with the issues and implications created by the growing adoption of information technologies for inter-human communication. The project will also focus on assessing the continuing impact of emergent cybermedia for human communication and culture. In particular the conference will encourage equally theoretical and practical debates which surround the cultural contexts within which cybermedial and technological advances are occurring.

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 4th November 2011. All submissions are minimally double blind peer reviewed where appropriate. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 9th March 2012. Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: Cubercultures Abstract Submission.

Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). Please note that a Book of Abstracts is planned for the end of the year. We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

The conference is part of the 'At the Interface' programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting.

All papers accepted for and presented at this conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers maybe invited for development for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s) or for inclusion in a new Cyber journal (launching 2011).

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Department of History, National University of Singapore, invites applications for Two (2) Postdoctoral Fellowships.
 
Area of Expertise  
Postdoctoral Fellowship (Post 1)
 
The successful candidate will be someone who holds a PhD degree (or is awaiting conferment) and has research interests and expertise in Empires in Asia. Preference will be given to a candidate with expertise in empires in Asia of the 18th century.  This includes but is not limited to systems, concepts, theories and networks of empire, imperialism and colonization. The Fellow will work closely with faculty members in the Department on a research project in this area.
 
Postdoctoral Fellowship (Post 2)
 
The successful candidate will be someone who holds a PhD degree (or is awaiting conferment) and has research interests and expertise in Empires in Asia. Preference will be given to a candidate with expertise in the Ming and early Qing period, focusing on China. This includes but is not limited to systems, concepts, theories and networks of empire, imperialism and hegemony. The Fellow will work closely with faculty members in the Department on a research project in this area.
 
Terms and Conditions  
The terms and conditions for the Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) are as follows:
 
1. Contract to be awarded beginning from January 2012 tenable for one year and renewable, upon review, for a second year.
 
2. A stipend of S$4,500 per month.
 
3. An allowance of S$500 a month as contribution towards housing expenses for non-citizens (i.e. non-Singaporeans) and their spouses who do not own any property in Singapore and whose spouses are not in receipt of any form of housing benefits from their Singapore employers.
 
4. Singapore citizens and permanent residents are eligible for provident fund benefits.
 
5. Travel Assistance, payable once only, as follows.
·         $2,000 for the Postdoctoral Fellow
·         $2,000 for spouse
 
The above travel assistance is a contribution towards expenses incurred by the appointee and his/her dependants in re-locating to Singapore. Such expenses refer to costs for travel, packing, transportation and insurance of personal and professional effects as well as settling-in expenses.
 
The travel allowance is contingent upon the Postdoctoral Fellow's completion of his/her initial one-year contract. In the event that the appointee does not fulfill the initial one-year contract, the appointee shall be liable to refund the University a proportionate amount of the travel assistance granted to him/her and his/her dependants on appointment. 
 
6. Foreign PDFs who are granted Singapore Permanent Residence will continue to receive an allowance of S$500 a month as contribution towards housing expenses.  The allowance will cease once they acquire Singapore citizenship.
 
7. Medical benefits in accordance with the Medical Benefit Plan.
 
8. Vacation leave of 28 days per calendar year.
 
In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will be expected to
 
·      Present at least one seminar a year;
·      Give first right of refusal for at least one publication to a Department/Faculty-produced journal, where appropriate;
·      Contribute to the activities of graduate students;
·      Participate in a joint research project with NUS staff on Empires in Asia 
 
The appointed PDF may be required to participate in some part-time teaching of up to 3 hours per week without additional pay.

Subject: Diaspora: Islam and Democracy: Potential and Possibilities

"Islam and Democracy: Potential and Possibilities" (London, Ontario,
Canada) The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social Science at the
University of Western Ontario, together with Huron University College
and King's University College at the University of Western Ontario,
invite paper submission. This conference will consider critical and
timely questions: first, what is the outlook for democracy in
Muslim-majority states? And related to this, to what extent are the
principles of Islam and Democracy compatible? Through intellectual
exchange and interdisciplinary synthesis among legal scholars,
historians, political scientists, philosophers, sociologists,
anthropologists and professionals from outside of the academy, the
conference aims to identify and foster the development of a set of core
principles suited to democratic constitutions in Muslim-majority states.

With this goal in mind, conference organizers invite submission of
papers from established scholars and graduate students exploring any of
the following topics and questions as they bear on the relationship
between Islam and Democracy:

- Islam, Democracy and Theology: what has been the historical
experience? Religious and theological studies of Islam will explore the
question of how politics is/has been integrated within Islam? What
possibilities exist in Islamic thought to enhance Democratic processes?
- Islam, Democracy and Political Theory: what do existing models and
ideals of democracy have to contribute to the evolution of
constitutional principles in Muslim-majority countries?
- Islam, Democracy and Constitutionalism: what are the commonalities and
the asymmetries between Constitutional law and the principles of Islamic
(Sharia) law and between western and Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh)?
- Islam, Democracy and Contemporary Politics: how are existing patterns
of democracy and representation in Muslim-majority states and
institutional structures evolving across a broad range of regimes?
- Islam, Democracy and Political Culture: how can patterns of civic
engagement, community organization, discourses of citizenship and
political identity, social and political movements and political
partisanship inform the evolution of democratic processes within Muslim
communities and societies?

Send proposals which should include a 300-word abstract and a short CV

Eligibility criteria: 

Applications are invited from researchers/policy analysts/professional staff, who are full-time employees of independent think-tanks, policy institutes, and democracy and human rights advocacy NGOs in CIS countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan). 

Applicants should be citizens of one of the 12 eligible countries.

This is a PASOS fellowship scheme funded by the National Endowment for Democracy in memory of our late colleague, Ilko Kucheriv, founder of Democratic Initiatives Foundation, Ukraine. DIF and the Institute of Public Affairs, Poland are partners on the project.

The programme will provide mentoring and networking opportunities for five fellows from the CIS countries with the aim to gain practical skills, interact with other researchers, and exchange practices with well-established think-tanks and NGOs in the EU. 

The fellowships should focus on specific democratic transformation issues

(e.g. media freedom, constitutional law, parliamentary democracy, judiciary, public opinion research, electoral processes, free and fair elections, building democratic awareness among the general public, etc.)

Fellowship budget

Each fellow will receive up to a maximum of US$ 3,600 in expenses, covering international and local travel, visa costs where necessary, and subsistence and accommodation for the five weeks spent at the host organisation. 

Each host organisation will receive US$ 2,500 in mentoring fees and US$ 500 in overhead costs for hosting the fellow. These fees are inclusive of all taxes.

Mentoring

Fellows will work with the hosting institute for a six-month period or project co-operation and mentoring, and spend up to five weeks in the office of the hosting think-tank. Fellowships will also provide one-on-one, hands-on training with the host institute's expert as mentor. The goal is to provide a mentoring opportunity for an in-depth, on-site, and interactive experience in democratic transformation and protection of human rights. 

Research project

The fellowship should comprise: 

1. A research project with a thematic focus related to democratic transformation issues (e.g. media freedom, constitutional law, parliamentary democracy, judiciary, public opinion research, electoral processes, free and fair elections, building democratic awareness among the general public, etc.)

2. A visit to a hosting think-tank in an EU member-state (including new EU member-states).
